Azimuth is a new consulting firm in the Washington, DC/Northern Virginia metro area. We started out on this adventure after each spending decades running operations and working as CFOs in companies both large and small. After years of struggling with the challenges of building and growing businesses, our own frustrations led us to recognize a gap in the market where we could provide value and do work that we enjoy.

A bevy of consultants focus on narrow technical niches - accounting, IT, ERP implementations, etc. But too often this limited focus results in systems and processes that don’t align with the business strategy. It’s like the story of the blind men and the elephant - one thinks he’s touching a tree, another thinks he’s touching a snake, another a wall, and another one a fan. None are individually wrong about their experiences, but they fail to put the entire picture into full view because they’re focused only on their limited perspective.

Our approach is to couple deep technical expertise in strategy, finance, technology and operations with visionary C-level leadership experience. After “living in the trenches” in leadership roles over many years, we completely understand how challenging it is to manage the day-to-day while striving to keep the big picture in view. As a result, our approach is to help provide management teams with the extra bandwidth and experience necessary to align strategy, systems, and people during periods of growth and transition.

The big firms can provide integrated services - at a steep price. But most small- and medium-sized firms don’t have the resources to hire a Big 4 consultancy. And those that do usually find they get the “B” team because big firms focus on big accounts.

Azimuth aims to bridge this gap for mid-sized organizations. We help companies integrate and align major initiatives at a fraction of the cost of a Big 4 firm.

We chose the name “Azimuth” because we believe that it perfectly captures the essence of what we do. It comes from a medieval Arabic word, al-sumut, which means “the direction.” Success in any endeavor requires a clear purpose and the alignment of strategy, systems, and people.

We also like how the word captures our shared heritage of service. As military veterans of the land and sea services, we used the word routinely, and we think it pays a small homage to our brothers and sisters in uniform.

The concept of transformation ties together nearly everything we do. Transformational events drive new approaches, require new tools and processes, and demand new ways of thinking. They create moments of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. We relish the challenge of navigating these transitions, and helping our clients come through them.

We provide services that include:

  • Strategy planning and implementation
  • ERP System Implementations
  • Business Intelligence solutions
  • Turnarounds
  • Interim management

Azimuth reflects the culmination of decades of work and experience, as well as years of discussion. We’re excited to launch, and look forward to growing a great business centered on helping clients solve their most challenging problems!
